Why Does Mouth Hurt After Wire Change With Braces?

When you first got all your braces on, it did not hurt until the wire went in. The braces are only an anchor on your teeth and then the wire is put in and held with either a wire tie(metal ties) or the colorful elastics. If your tooth or teeth are quite crooked, we will use the metal tie to hold the wire in place so the tooth can move. The colorful elastics are good too, only when we need to move the teeth or tooth slightly at a time.  The wire does all the moving of your teeth. That is why sometimes when you go for your orthodontist appt. they will not always change the wire but put some bends on the wire so the tooth or teeth will move to the right position.  It is a good sign that your teeth or tooth are sore or hurt. Try and remember how your tooth or teeth were and check and see if it moved. Ask your orthodontist how he/she wants the tooth or teeth to move so you can check it too.  Also your teeth or tooth may feel loose as your gums are soft from all the moving. That is why you also have to wear the retainer when your braces are off. It takes a year after your braces are off to firm up your gum. Keep up with the good work.
