Permanent retainer with an overbite
i got my braces off in october, and wanted to get a permanent retainer on the top teeth (i already have a permanent retainer on the bottom). my orthodontist said i could not get a permanent retainer on the top teeth because i have an over bite. is this true? i am currently wearing a clear retainer on my top teeth during the day time, and a hawley retainer on the top teeth at night time. my ortho said that i could not get a permanent retainer on the top because my over bite could get worse and/or my upper/lower teeth can shift.

Answer: Yes, that is correct for now that you cannot get a permanent retainer for the top teeth
By
Your orthodontist had told you that he/she could not put on a permanent retainer on the top teeth due to a overbite. If the orthodontist did put on the permanent retainer on your top teeth, you would be biting on it or hitting it with the lower teeth. If that was the case, your lower teeth can move by you constantly hitting the top retainer. Your orthodontist is doing the right thing right now by you wearing a plastic and hawley retainer. Once your overbite is corrected to the point that you will not hit it with your lower teeth, he/she may put on a permanent retainer on your upper teeth. Keep up the good work and wear the retainer for a year and then see what happpens.
