Jaw Problems from the Expander
My daughter had an expander put in before her braces. Her braces have been off for several years now. However, she now has a very loud "clicking" "snapping" sound in her jaw when she has to open her mouth wide and then closes it. The sound happens on the left side of her mouth. But, when she is chewing food, the sound happens most of the time. Her pediatrician said it was from the expander. Can youplease let me know what happened while she was wearing the expander to cause this?

Answer: Expander widen her upper palate

An expander widen your daughter upper palate. This is a common procedure when there is a patient who has a small upper palate and needs to be widen to make room for all the teeth. Sometimes when wearing an expander the bite will be totally off, as in your daughter situation she is starting to get clicking sounds in her jaw. This is a start of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is where you get clicking sound of the jaw. It is where the jaw bone, upper jaw meets the lower jaw by your ear gets out of alignnment. At your daughter next orthodontist appointment I would let the orthodontist know about this situation, as your daughter is wearing the appliance and braces, he/she should be able and correct this within time.
