Since you haven't had the expander placed yet, you have some time before you have to worry about a diastema (gap) between your front teeth. Usually the expander is placed and utilized until there is enough expansion for all of your teeth to fit. Once this step is complete, more than likely your brackets and bands will be bonded and full orthodontic treatment will have begun. You are in the early but necessary stages of your treatment. Due to the movement being slow and gradual, your mouth and tongue will adjust to the space and speaking will more than likely not be an issue. Sometimes the gap is only 2-3mm, which may seem like a lot, but will go unnoticed to most. The most accurate answer will come from your orthodontist and should be asked prior to placement of the expander so you are well prepared.
