Upon the end of your treatment, your orthodontist will get you ready for post braces treatment which includes retainers to hold your teeth in place. While procedures vary from orthodontist and by patient, the typical procedure is as follows:
You will be scheduled an appointment in which you will be fitted for retainers. The molds are made of your teeth usually with the braces on. These molds are sent out to the retainer manufacturer to develop your retainers exactly to the molds. Your orthodontist will usually receive them in about 2 to 4 weeks.
Your next appointment you will have your braces removed which also includes removing any of the boding that is remaining the tooth using special tools. This is a painless process and usually you will not see any marks on your teeth. It is recommended that you get a good cleaning shortly after getting your braces off.
The orthodontist will then place your retainers on your teeth to ensure they fit properly. It is important that they fit the way they should and not be too tight or too loose. Your orthodontist is able to determine a good fit, but it never hurts to speak up if you feel they don't fit right.
You will be advised to wear the retainers all day every day until the next appointment in which your orthodontist will continue to monitor your teeth for stability post braces. Retainers such as Hawley Retainers can be adjusted to be made tighter if needed.
It is very important that you realize that just because you are getting your braces off that your treatment period is not over. Retainers are as important as the braces are if not more. Far to often we see patients relapse beacuase of poor retainer use especially teens.

Answer: Yes, everything is done in one appointment

The answer to your question is Yes. Usually when you arrive to your orthodontic appointment, the firlst thing they will do is usually is loosen and bands you have and we have a special instrument that will fit over your brackets and snap loose. We usually leave everything on ( wire ties or elastic ties, and wire). We then proceed to remove all the hardware. Your teeth then wil feel weird as there will some roughness on the teeth due to some cement still left on. There are two ways to remove the glue is by using a instrument specially made to scrape off the glue or a highspeed drill with a special bit to also remove the glue and not damage your teeth enamel. Make sure who ever uses the highspeed is the dentist or hygienist who is trained and license to use the highspeed drill instrument. Once all that is done we will take beautiful pictures of your new smile so we have a before and after pictures. There are two types of retainer that are available, the first one is a removable upper and lower in which you will have to wear full time for the first year (very critical) asy your gums are soft from all the moving of your teeth. It takes a year to get hard again. Also the second one is a permenant retainer which is bonded onto the front six teeth(cuspid to cuspid)top and bottom on the inside(lingual). I prefer this one because you don't have to worry about not forgetting to wear them and or loosing them.
