Crossbite being fixed with retainers and rubber bands
Hi, I am a teen who got their braces off about eight months ago, and has been wearing retainers ever since. Let me start by saying that I have had two sets of braces, expanders and spacers-basically any orthodontic procedure has been done to me-for four years (and eight teeth pulled, four of which were through surgery). So, a pretty long time. When I got my braces off, I was told to wear my retainers all day with rubber bands to fix a crossbite on my left side for about four months. Once I did that, I thought that I could just go to night wear-which I did for about two months. But after that, my orthodontists started saying that I now have a crossbite on my right side (?) so I have to wear my retainers all day again with rubber bands. I was pretty annoyed at this point, since I assumed that four years was enough time to give to fix a crossbite (which my dentist says is extremely minimal and all the way back to my last few teeth). So I wore them just at night instead of all day. When I went in to my appointment, they were very angry that I hadn't worn them and told me that I would have to do it or I would have to come in basically forever until I was "fired" from being a patient. Ultimately, I am tired of constantly having minimal things fixed- once I got my braces off, I was happy with my smile. I don't see why this is such a big deal. My parents are now arguing about if I should even finish treatment- my mom wants me to, but my dad says that if I am happy with my smile than that is all that should matter. Let me stress that this crossbite is very minimal and just happened to "show up" after they fixed the original crossbite. Is it completely necessary for my orthodontic health to have this crossbite fixed, or can I just go on with my life like all of my friends have been able to? Are there any side effects that would be detrimental? Thank you. Sorry that I sound so annoyed, I am just very frustrated with all this.
