A multi-suface filling is a dental restoration that covers more than one part of a tooth. Each tooth  has five surfaces.

These surfaces are:

1. Occlusal or Incisal – the surface on the biting part of the tooth, or the top of the tooth
2. Mesial – the surface of the tooth that faces the midline of the jaw, or the front part of a tooth
3. Distal – the surface of the tooth that faces the away from the midline of the jaw, or the back part of a tooth
4. Facial or Labial – the surface of the tooth that faces the cheek or lip
5. Lingual  or Palatal – the surface of the tooth that faces the tongue or palate

Therefore a multi-surface filling  is one that encompasses two or more of the above surfaces. For example a MOD amalgam is an amalgam (silver filling) that covers the mesial (M), occlusal (O) and distal (D) surfaces of the tooth. The price of a filling will usually increase with the addition of each surface. You should ask your dentist before he or she begins your filling to know how much it will cost. It will usually be a factor of how many surfaces it will cover, which ones it will cover and what type of filling material will be used.
