Bone Grafting
Hello I am 42 years old and I recently had an orthodontic consultation where the orthodontist said that because I have a slight posterior cross bite on my upper right side, I MAY need a bone graft (before a full course of Invisalign or braces) or even a second SARPE (I had this when I was 19) to achieve optimal results. Basically, I lack sufficient bone in width and a bone graft would allow bone to be added to my existing host bone with minimal trauma and provide the orthodontist with sufficient volume of bone to move my teeth laterally into the graft, which will eventually convert into my own bone, to correct my cross bite. Imagine a wooden table, two feet wide, with a couple of glasses resting on the edge of the right side. A carpenter would attach a wooden plank (maybe 6 inches wide) to the right side of this table so as to add width or space in order to allow the glasses to be moved further to the right. She also said the relatively new and minimally invasive SMART (subperiosteal minimally invasive esthetic ridge augmentation technique) bone grafting technique might be the best of these procedures. I stressed that I do not want to have a second SARPE, but I am open to the idea of a bone graft. I was referred to two periodontists who perform this particular procedure. Are you familiar with the SMART bone grafting technique? I understand that bone grafting is pretty standard for dental implants but in general, have you performed or know of patients who have had bone grafting for orthodontic reasons such as mine?
