Tooth sensitivity after a retaining wire has been rebonded.
Hi. I have recently had the retainer wire on the back of my four front teeth rebonded as it had become a bit worn and was feeling rough on my teeth. (I had my braces off 6 years ago). A few days on and my teeth feel more sensitive than normal, they are 'tingling'. I have checked the wire in the mirror and it looks fine and I don't think my teeth have changed position at all. Could you tell me if this is normal and will wear off or if you think I should go back and tell my orthodontist if it carries on for a few more days. Thank You. Anne Miller

Chances are you teeth may have shifted slightly. Having a fixed retainer is difficult sometimes to notice if the composite or ortho composite had come off or came off even a single tooth it was bonded too. It may look to you that it is all intact when it actually may have come off the lingual of the tooth and is connected to the wire but not the tooth itself. When the.orthodontist rebonds the tooth it may be putting more pressure on the tooth again. It could be just moving the tooth back to the position it was when initially getting the fixed retainer was placed. The bonding may have been off for awhile until you noticed it and the tooth or teeth are now getting used to the position without the retaining wire. Now with the pressure back on the teeth they can become sensitive until they get used to having that pressure back on the teeth. Things may be moving back to how they were. I would give it a week or two and see if that goes away which it should. If it does not or it seems to get worst perhaps even see your regular dentist and they may want to take an xray to weigh out the possibility.of having a cavity.
