Plastic retainer help please?

Hi there. I am 20 yo female and had braces for 2.5 years and got them off when I was 15. When I got them off, they said I had to wear a plastic retainer but didn’t specify for how long. They also inserted a couple of wires behind the front few bottom teeth and behind the front few top teeth. I went to my dentist recently to ask him to remould a plastic retainer for me because mine was getting big holes in it and he said I didn’t need to get another plastic retainer or even wear it at all because of the wires inserted behind my teeth. Is this true? I don’t want to follow his advice and find out my teeth move because I am not wearing my retainer. Thanks!

Answer: Orthodontic Retention

The wires located behind your maxillary (upper) and mandibular (lower) teeth are fixed lingual retainers. Most orthodontists recommend both the fixed and the clear plastic retainers as the best means of orthodontic retention. If your general dentist doesn't feel comfortable making you new clear plastic retainers, ask for an orthodontic referral. Your smile is your investment and you want to feel confident it is maintained. Most orthodontists can make you a new set of clear plastic retainers in the office within 24-48 hours.
