Should I get a root canal?

Half of my front tooth got knocked out when I was young and the dentist filled it or bonded it with something to make the tooth look normal. My current dentist wanted to put a crown in when I got older and it came apart two or three times, now he wants me to get a root canal to fix the tooth or cap, but there is no damage at all to the root or tissue. Is that what I should do because the cap fell off again?

Answer: Should I get a root canal

The reason your dentist is suggesting a root canal, is most likely because there is not enough tooth structure remaining to support the crown. The tooth needs to be treated with a post and build up. In order for him/her to place a post in the tooth to build it up properly to support the crown, a root canal would need to be performed. The first attempt at restoring this tooth as an adult was a crown, which is the most conservative treatment, especially with half of the tooth missing, it has been unsuccessful. So unfortunately, without placing a post and build up in the tooth, your crown will continue to come out periodically, running the risk of more of the tooth breaking.
