Can new crowns be replaced?

My 4 year old daughter had to have crowns placed on her two front teeth and I of course asked for white crowns. Once the procedure began the dentist went through several crowns of the white ones to get them to fit and they all were sticking out and needing adjustment. She asked for me to come over and look and said she was going smaller and smaller to shaving her teeth to get them to fit better but that it didn\'t seem to go as she wanted...while this was happening my daughter was crying sometimes screaming and appeared to be very uncomfortable. The dentist pulled out the silver crowns trying different ones and suggested it be better...I, in all my discomfort and unhappiness with how things were going, said okay in order to get my daughter relief. My daughter has had crowns placed in the back of her mouth one on each side and went through those procedures without a peep. I mean she did absolutely fine. From the beginning of this procedure, everything just seemed off even with the laughing gas but they kept reassuring me things were fine.

I am not happy with my daughter\'s crowns (especially with the silver crowns), although the numbness has worn off and she is in no pain, her gums are discolored and her lip n teeth seem to be sitting out. I know it may take a day or two for her to adjust. I don\'t like that she herself at 4 (& without me saying) says \"mommy I look silly and don\'t feel pretty\" ...the whole process at the dentist was just \"off\" ...I\'m sorry, very frustrated...I don\'t want to put my daughter through anything else unnecessarily..can these crowns be readjusted with new WHITE crowns to fit her teeth as they should look & feel...I know no two people crowns will fit the same but I have seen other children and parents I have talked to children\'s mouths look fitted much better and teeth look much better... the procedure was done yesterday...prior to all of this my daughter had a beautiful smile with the exception of the brown spot on the front of her teeth that caused a concerned but you only noticed it if you\'re up close to her...the work done yesterday does not seem to be the dentist\'s best...can it be fixed...or is her mouth stuck like this until her teeth start to come out??? Help please!?

Answer: Replacing Stainless Steel Crowns

By Sarah h
Dental Professional

Unfortunately removing the stainless steel crowns and attempting to re-fit new acrylic white crowns will cause additional stress and trauma to your daughter and her teeth. Many times we like to catch decay when it is small so we do not have to restore primary teeth with crowns, rather we can place small resin fillings on the teeth instead. Not only are the stainless steel crowns not cosmetic, but only serve as a temporary fix until the permanent teeth erupt.
