Answer: Treatment of a bad toothache

By

A toothache can be caused by several factors.  First, it could be your wisdom tooth attempting to completely erupt, causing pressure on the tooth in front of it. If there is room for the tooth, once it has erupted completely, the tooth will begin to calm down and pain will subside.  Sometimes is there is an impaction, the tissue around the tooth can create a pocket and trap food and bacteria.  This would cause a periodontal infection that would reoccur until the tooth was extracted or erupted completely so the tissue will tighten and hygiene can be maintained.  A deep carious lesion may also result in pain if it reaches the nerve tissue.  Once a cavity reaches the nerve tissue, a root canal must be performed.  It is best to keep the  area as clean as possible, a chlorahexadine rinse would help reduce the bacteria count in the mouth until you are able to see a dentist and have an X-ray taken to diagnose the cause.  Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory and may help reduce your pain and a small amount of swelling, along with warm moist compresses.  You may also need an oral antibiotic if there is an infection present.  Do not wait to see your dentist, as the problem  will need to  be addressed sooner rather than later.  Early treatment is best.
